1968 Signed Letter From Personal Secretary of PRESIDENT JOHNSON – MINT!!!

In the tumultuous year of 1968, I was a mere 16 years-old. Robert Kennedy had just been assassinated three months earlier. And the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr killed in April of that year. I was a confused and frightened teenager. I decided to write President Lyndon B Johnson a letter of support mainly because it seemed the world was collapsing around his ears. And ours. I had yet to really become involved in Politics, The Vietnam War etc. My little protected world seemed fine up in the corner of Washington State. But I think on some level I sensed huge changes were on the horizon. I had no idea then how I knew they were coming or why. I would learn with the rest of America.
I remember the day I got this -I got called into The Office at the High School I attended. I thought to myself, “What did I do wrong?” They proudly took me into The Principles office and gave this letter to me. I was shocked, to say the least. I enjoyed the congratulations of the adults around me (including my Parents) but must admit wondered if I deserved it.
It’s condition is MINT! It’s hardly even been exposed to light. It has been in a sealed plastic bag for decades. I sadly, seem to have lost the envelope it came in.
I have kept this letter in my Keepsakes Box ever since then, only taking it out to look at maybe three times in the ensuing 50 years. It’s time to let it go. .
